N-pocket runs Multimedia Center for the Challenged, especially for people with visually impaired and developmental disabilities.
The Management and Operation of the Center
Computer has brought array of possibilities for the challenged people. For example, visually impaired people are now able to acquire the information on the screen by screen reader, voice software, and optical character recognition technology (OCR).
For those who have difficulty in speaking, or physically challenged, computer can be utilized as a communication tool with lots of possibilities.
On one hand, such multimedia devices are positively influencing our society, but on the other hand, there still exists many challenges.
In order to expand the possibility by, using multimedia devices and utilizing information, to as much people as we can, and to mitigate as much problems as possible, our organization was trusted the management and the operation of the Western Shizuoka Mutimedia Center for the Challenged by the Shizuoka Prefecture. The center's objective is to promote independence, and to encourage social participation of the elderly, and the challenged, giving respect to their will.
Operational programs of the year 2002
1. Provision of Information
The center provided various application software and internet, and related information through special computer and multimedia devices that can be used by visually and hearing impaired, and the challenged people.
2. Provision of computer lessons for the challenged
1) Computer lessons towards job acquisition for the visually impaired
2) User friendly home page building lessons for community based organizations
3) Demonstration for 'computer trainer lesson' trainee
3. Computer lesson for the challenged
In order to attend this lesson, reservation is necessary. However, it is not operated on a curriculum basis, but rather done with more flexibility so that people can easily attend such lessons taught by the staff.
4. A rental service of brail printer to brail translation group
The local brail translation volunteer group borrows brail translation software, and printer available at our center.
5. Explanation of Universal Design information provision, and hands-on experience of the devices.
Elementary and middle school students, NPO staffs, business people, people who work for the welfare field experienced the use of multimedia equipments for the challenged, and obtained information regarding the issue at our center.
6. Volunteer Staff Meeting
People with special talents who support the challenged people network with people who share the same interest at this center. They hold gatherings, and hold activities at the center.
7. the Committee
The committee consists of organizations whose members themselves have disabilities, and those organizations eager to support the challenged operate this advisory board.
